There are some common misconceptions about laser hair removal, and we’re here to discuss some of them. You may be surprised to find that what you thought true is actually truly a myth! Lets tackle them right now…
MYTH #1 – “Dark skin tones can’t get treated on laser.”
This is completely WRONG! Darker skin tones can absolutely be treated on lasers with our Candela GentleYAG laser. Our laser can treat the darkest Fitzpatrick type 6 skin tone with no issue, and give you excellent results. In fact, with both our Alexandrite and YAG lasers, we can effectively treat ALL skin tones from the fairest to the darkest. (*keep in mind- hair color, thickness, and density does matter.)
MYTH #2 – “Laser Hair Removal is painful!”
While we aren’t going to sugar-coat things and say that laser hair removal is painless like some places claim, we will tell you that laser hair removal isn’t the worst thing you’ll ever feel. If you can imagine what a hot rubber band snap might feel like, that is a similar feeling to what you’ll feel. It can be uncomfortable, but most people find it very tolerable and because it is so quick, actually less painful than waxing or plucking. Plus, you don’t have the same trauma to the surface of the skin that waxing can cause (and no ingrowns!). The laser emits a cooling pulse so that the surface of your skin is protected and cooled at the same time. In addition, you can use a 5% Lidocaine numbing cream that can help reduce the pain.
MYTH #3 – “Laser Hair Removal is way too expensive. I can’t afford it!”
If you can afford to shave, wax, manicure, pedicure, hair color, etc…you can afford to do laser. Laser hair removal is about two years of waxing payments up-front, however, if you consider that you’ll be waxing likely for the rest of your life, laser hair removal is WAY more economical! If you add up the lifetime cost of waxing and shaving, you’re looking at over $10,000 (waxing by a professional will bring the cost up additionally). Depending on the areas you choose to do, you’re spending significantly less than that to permanently reduce the hair on your body, and make shaving minimal to non-existent. We do deals with websites such as GiltCity as well as our own specials from time to time, so there are deals to be had!
MYTH #4 - “Laser Hair Removal is too time consuming!”
If you can spare 15 minutes or more, every 6 weeks for about 6-8 times, then laser hair removal is NOT too time consuming for you. Most small to medium areas can be done in 15 minutes (or less!), and medium to large areas ranging from 30 minutes to one hour. Spread out every 6 weeks or more, you are actually not looking at a lot of time spent. In addition, in between your sessions, you do not need to do much to maintain the area, so you aren’t spending the time shaving or waxing daily or monthly.
MYTH #5 – “I need to let the hair grow!”
WRONG. You do not need any length of hair to get treated on the laser. All you need is for there to be hair in the follicle actively growing, but this hair can be shaved close to the skin and does not need to be long- in fact, we prefer that it is shaved as close as possible. As long as the hair hasn’t been waxed or plucked prior to the laser, you’re fine.
